Please let me know what kind of stainless steel is used for the body, lid, and bottom?

Body and lid: SUS304 Bottom: SUS430

There is a white substance (chlorine) inside the kettle. How can I remove it?

If you are worried about chlorine, put in some water and citric acid, boil it, and leave the kettle until it becomes cold. After that, wash the kettle with water.

Why is there rust on the surface? Please also let me know how to take care of it.

Stainless steel rarely gets rusty. But it could rust when salt or iron, which rusts easily, adheres to the surface. If it gets rusty, first, wipe it off with a sponge and cream cleanser. Then, rinse off the cream cleanser, wipe the body with dry cloth, and dry it completely.

I heated the kettle without water in it and the kettle became brown. What should I do?

You can rub it off with stainless steel wool and a cleanser for stainless steel.

A white substance adheres to inside the pot. What is it? Can I continue using the pot as it is?"

Please don't worry. The white residue is formed when magnesium, calcium, iron, and other minerals contained in water deposit and adhere to inside the pot. The white residue is made of the ingredients that are naturally contained in water. Hygienically, there is no prob- lem.
*The white residue could cause corrosion and/or rust in the long term. We recommend you thoroughly wash the pot after use.
We also suggest that you regularly wash it using citric acid.

Please let me know how to take care of the power kettle.

Please see below for regular care:
      1. Put in water up to the MAX line, add a tablespoonful of citric acid detergent or vinegar, and mix it. (Adjust the quantity of citric acid detergent or vinegar depending on the degree of uncleanness.)
      2. Close the lid until it clicks and turn on the power kettle.
      3. When the water boils, pour out the hot water. Wipe off the attached residue.
      4. Thoroughly rinse it with water.
      5. If an acid smell bothers you, put in some water, boil it, and throw away the hot water.
*When the water boils, the glass becomes very hot. Please be careful not to get burned.
** Instead of a citric acid detergent or vinegar a detergent for electric pots can also be used to remove scum.

I don't like the odor of the kettle. Is there any way to reduce it?

      Please try the following:
      1. Fill the kettle with water to the MAX line, and mix in approx. 30g of citric acid (or an equivalent amount of vinegar).
      2. Replace the lid, boil the kettle and then leave to stand for approxi- mately 1 hour.
      3. Throw away the water and rinse thoroughly with water. Repeat this procedure if the odor is not reduced.
*The odor (metallic odor or resin odor) may appear stronger when the product is heated.

    • Coffee Maker
    • Syphon

When the hot water boils up into the upper bowl, not all of it boils up - a little bit remains in the lower bowl. Why is that?

A little bit of water is meant to remain in the lower bowl by design. The water remaining in the lower bowl will keep the bowl
      from boiling dry.

I have a syphon with a 5-cup capacity upper bowl and a 3-cup capacity lower bowl. Is it okay for there to be a capacity difference between the two bowls?

This kind of combination should be avoided. The length of the upper bowl's neck is different depending on the number of cups, so this kind of combination could lead to burning or damage.

What should I do if hot water isn't rising into the upper bowl?

If this happens, please review the possible problems and solutions
      below:

The angle at which the upper bowl has been inserted into the lower bowl is askew.
→ Insert the upper bowl into the lower bowl straight.

→ The syphon rubber may deteriorate and require replacement depending on factors such as how long it has been used and frequency of use.

The eyelets in the filter have become clogged with ground coffee. → Clean out the filter using a toothbrush, etc. If this does not solve the problem, replace the filter (filters should be replaced about every 60 uses, depending on usage conditions).

→ There may be a defect in your product or its fittings. In such cases, please contact our customer service line (iico@hario.com). We apologize for any inconvenience.
Performing the adjustments indicated above should solve most issues.
If water still does not rise to the top bowl even after following the above instructions, please contact us for consultation
(iico@hario.com). We apologize for any inconvenience.

Coffee is falling back into the lower bowl. What should I do?

If this happens, please review the possible problems and solutions below:

      Show details(PDF)

There is a crack on the lower bowl, even though the lower bowl has not been bumped against anything. How could this have happened?

It is possible that the bowl was scratched during use, and the scratch developed into a crack when heat was applied. Additionally, applying excessive heat (for too long or at too high a tempreture) can cause the bowl to boil dry or overheat, resulting in a raised temperature in parts of the glass.
These sudden changes in temperature or developing cracks may weaken the strength of the glass, leading to breakage. If the lower bowl cracks, stop using it immediately and replace.

    • Cold Brew Coffee Pot

      [All cold brew coffee products]
Can I use this product for instant coffee?

This product is for coffee grounds made by grinding coffee beans.

Which level of roasting and coarseness are recommend- ed for the coffee grounds?

We recommend medium-fine dark roaster grounds.

      [All cold brew coffee pots]
My pot is specifically for making X cups. Can I make fewer cups?

Due to the relationship between the size of the strainer and that of the pot, making fewer pots may mean that the strainer holding the coffee grounds is not sufficiently submerged in the water and the grounds is not sufficiently submerged in the water and the grounds will not be properly extracted. We recommend making the specified number of cups.

[cold brew coffee pots and filter-in coffee bottles]
Can I make other drinks (black tea, green tea, etc.) ?

Yes, but if coffee and tea are both made with the same strainer, odor from one drink may taint the other. If concerned about odor, soak in diluted household bleach or buy one of our separate strain- ers.

The strainer is blocked. Can I fix this?

Soak the strainer in boiling water, then use a soft sponge and neutral detergent to gently clean it. If the strainer is still blocked, wash it in diluted household bleach. Follow the instructions of your household bleach, as soaking for too long will make the plastic less durable.

What's the difference between this product and the cold brew tea pot / filter-in tea bottle?

There are differences in the design and functionality of the glass, the printing and the mesh size of the strainer. The strainer is finer because coffee grounds are finer than tea leaves.

      [filter-in coffee bottles]
How do I open the strainer?

The figure below shows how to open it.

      Show details(PDF)

Can I use the filter from the filter-in bottle?

      Yes, you can.

Can I store this product lying down?

This product cannot be stored lying down because it does not have a seal and the contents will leak.

Should I remove the strainer or leave it in the bottle once my coffee has finished brewing?

To keep your coffee from becoming bitter, once it's finished brewing, remove the strainer and keep the bottle in your refrigerator.

      [water dripper]
I have an earlier model of the water dripper. Can I use the lever packing of the N water dripper for my model?

The N water dripper have a different dripping method from the previous water dripper. The PTN-5 lever packing (PA-PTN-5) and PTN-5 shaft lever set (SH-PTN-5) for the N water dripper can be used as a replacement.

    • Cloth Drip

Cloth Filter - Please let me know when I should change the flannel.

There is no fixed maximum use of the flannel because it varies depending on how you use it. As a guideline, we suggest you change it when the inside nap comes off after repeated washing and squeez- ing or when an extraction time becomes short.
If it is used once a day in an ordinary household, it should probably be changed once a month.
*When it is not used for a long time, put the wet flannel into an airtight bag with a zipper or seal it in a plastic wrap, and store it in a freezer.

Cloth Filter - why do I need to keep it soaked in water?

If it is sun-dried after being washed, the coffee ingredients that are absorbed in the flannel oxidize and add unwanted smell to the next brew. It should never be dry if you want to brew delicious coffee. Please wash it carefully after use, put it in water and keep it in a refrigerator.

Cloth Filter - which is inside or outside?

The cotton cloth without nap should be outside. When the fluffy nappy part gets wet, coffee is extracted through the fine space in the weave.

    • Microwave Cooking Ware

The instruction manual says that when heating oily food with a microwave, please remove the lid. What is meant by oily food?

It means food that was cooked using a lot of oil, e.g., fried food, Chinese food, curry, etc. When you fill a container with this kind of food and heat it in a microwave, the lid may melt. This is because the temperature of the oil attached to the lid exceeds the highest tem- perature that the lid can withstand.

When I cook, the rice is only half done. How can I improve it?

      There are two possible reasons.
      [Reason 1]
Rice isn't soaked in water long enough. As water does not permeate to the center of the rice, it becomes half done even if you follow the recipe. We recommend that you soak rice in water for more than 30 minutes in summer and more than 60 minutes in winter.
      [Reason 2]
The rice is not heated long enough or allowed to sit after heating long enough. Depending on the characteristics of your microwave or the kind of rice, you may need to heat rice longer or let it sit longer after heating.
      [Suggestion]
Sprinkle a tablespoonful of water (15 cc) over rice immediately after it is cooked and mix it thoroughly. Replace the lid and heat it for about one minute with the wattage level you used to cook it first. Again, mix it thoroughly, put the lid on, and let it sit for about 5 minutes.
*For wash-free rice, soak it in water 30 minutes longer.

The cooked rice is hard. How can I make it softer?

There are two possible reasons. [Reason 1]
Insufficient waterIf the water level is 1-2 mm lower than the "water line" (a shortage of 15-30 ml, one or two tablespoons), you will find the cooked rice very hard.
      [Reason 2]
OverheatingEven if you accurately follow the water quantity and the heating time length, you may find the cooked rice hard due to over- heating. This, again, depends on the characteristics of your micro- wave or the kind of rice you use.
      [Suggestion]
Cook rice as usual, shortening the heating time by 1-2 minutes. If you still find the cooked rice hard, try the above suggestions.

Something is sparkling in the glass container. What is it? Is it harmless?

They are called flakes. They can be seen when you look into a glass vacuum bottle.
Chemical compounds such as magnesium and calcium present in water react near the glass surface to form and accumulate ion crys- tals. They sparkle. They are minerals and harmless.
To remove them, put vinegar or a citric acid detergent (add ten parts of water to the liquid) in a glass container, leave it for more than one hour, and wash it with a sponge, etc. to avoid scratching the glass.
